Risk aversion and allocation to long-term bonds

چکیده

As risk aversion approaches infinity, the portfolio of an investor with utility over consumption at time T is shown to converge to the portfolio consisting entirely of a bond maturing at time T : Previous work on bond allocation requires a specific model for equities, the term structure, and the investor’s utility function. In contrast, the only substantive assumption required for the analysis in this paper is that markets are complete. The result, which holds regardless of the underlying investment opportunities and the utility function, formalizes the ‘‘preferred habitat’’ intuition of Modigliani and Sutch (Amer. Econom. Rev. 56 (1966) 178). r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: G1; G11; D81

Intertemporal Investment Strategies under Inflation Risk

This paper studies intertemporal investment strategies under inflation risk by extending Merton’s intertemporal framework (1973) to include a stochastic price index. The stochastic price index gives rise to both real and nominal terms of valuation: agents maximize their utility of consumption in real terms while investment activities and wealth evolution are evaluated in nominal terms. We inclu...

Multi-period asset allocation by stochastic dynamic programming

This study makes use of stochastic dynamic programming to set up a multi-period asset allocation model and derives an analytic formula for the optimal proportions invested in short and long bonds. Then maximum likelihood method is employed to estimate the relevant parameters. Finally, we implement the model through backward recursion algorithm to find numerically the optimal allocation of funds...

Asset Allocation Advice: Reconciling Expected Utility and Shortfall Risk Researchers studying the asset allocation problem for long-term investors have employed di®erent investor criterion functions. On The Future of Co-operatives: Talking Stock, Looking Ahead

Two extensions are formulated of the analysis of the allocation of decision rights in Hendrikse and Veerman (2001). First, the incomplete contracts in their article can be viewed as simple long-term contracts, i.e. it is not allowed to make the allocation of authority contingent on the circumstances. Contingent long-term contracts are now considered. Second, another aspect of decision rights is...
